How to Choose the Right Paint Finish

(ARA) -- In addition to purchasing a reputable, well-known brand of paint, it's important to find a finish that complements a room. Here's a quick guide to the types of paint finishes to help you determine which will work best for your rooms.

Flat Finish Paint

These finishes have no shine making them an excellent choice for hiding surface imperfections. However, flat finishes are not recommended for surfaces that are exposed to continual washing or scrubbing. Use them in low-trafficked rooms such as hallways, living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.

Satin Finish Paint

A satin paint has slightly more gloss than a flat and tends to make the room feel softer. Since it stands up well to washing, it can be used on many surfaces in your home.

Semi-Gloss Paint

These paints are shiny with reflective qualities. A very durable surface that can withstand scrubbing make them the perfect choice for kitchens and bathrooms.

Gloss Paint

Featuring the highest shine and best durability, gloss is recommended for smaller, higher traffic areas like doors and trim. The one caveat is that this finish does not hide surface imperfections so your eye will be drawn to any cracks and uneven surfaces.
